Darrelle Revis has been one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL or quite a while, but he has hinted at a possible position move down the road.

When we think of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, and those who epitomize the term “shutdown corner”, Darrelle Revis comes immediately to mind. New York Jets’ head coach Todd Bowles said the 31-year old is “still an elite corner for us,” but Revis himself is a little more reserved regarding his future as one of the top players at his position.

Via Connor Hughes of NJ.com, during an appearance on “Boomer and Carton” on WFAN radio, Revis acknowledged there will be conversations in the future about moving to safety.

"“There will probably be conversations in the future about maybe moving my position to safety,” Revis said on the Boomer and Carton Show on Thursday. “But as of right now, I still feel I can play at a high level, and play the cornerback position at a high level.”"

Revis talked about the possibility of moving to safety in a different radio appearance last week, suggesting it was “something I’d want to gravitate to” in the future. He struggled against some top-level wide receivers last season, which could be blamed on a wrist injury that required off-season surgery and has limited his practice activity thus far. That said, Revis clearly recognizes his time as a top cornerback is nearing an end.

Transitions from cornerback to safety are not uncommon, with Hall of Famer Rod Woodson and future Hall of Famer Charles Woodson both making the move with success late in their careers. The Washington Redskins are also making the move right now with DeAngelo Hall.

Revis could retire today and he would be a sure-fire Hall of Famer. But if he makes a strong transition to safety eventually, and performs at a Pro Bowl level at another position, it will be hard ignore him as a possible first-time eligible inductee.
