The final 16 women archers competed for a chance to shoot for a gold medal on Thursday, with South Korea taking another Olympics archery gold.
The 2016 Rio Olympics women’s individual archery event came to an end on Thursday, as the final 16 archers took their last shots at a medal. The Round of 16 started the day, with five of the top six archers from the ranking round still alive. By the time the women got to the quarterfinals, only the top four still remained.
The biggest surprise of the day came in the quarterfinals, as the top-seeded South Korean archer Choi Mi-sun was upset by eighth-seeded Alejandra Valencia of Mexico. Mi-sun was expected to take the gold in the event, after leading South Korea to a victory in the team competition earlier this Olympics.
Also falling in the quarterfinals was Tan Ya-ting, the fourth-seeded archer from Taipei. She was toppled by German juggernaut Lisa Unruh, who would go on an incredible run to the gold medal match. Unruh would take on Valencia in the semifinals, disposing of the Mexican archer, 6-2.

In the other semifinal match, it was a battle between two South Korean archers, as Kim Bo-bae and Chang Hye-jin fought for a spot in the gold medal match. Bo-bae, who won the gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics, could not secure a chance for a repeat, as Hye-jin beat her 7-3.
Bo-bae was able to capture the bronze medal, beating Valencia in the bronze medal match.
In the final, it was the kind of gold medal match everyone looks for, with an underdog facing a top-ranked archer. In the end, South Korea took another gold medal, as Hye-jin defeated Unruh 6-2. It was the second gold medal for Hye-jin at these Olympics, as she also won gold in the team event.
