USMNT full-back DeAndre Yedlin appears set for a transfer to Newcastle, according to multiple reports.

According to multiple reports, DeAndre Yedlin will soon be leaving Tottenham for Championship side Newcastle.

The 23-year-old right-back has been a consistent inclusion in the US men’s national team by manager Jurgen Klinsmann. Yedlin made 25 appearances for Sunderland while on loan last season, impressing then manager Sam Allardyce.

In the midst of a four year deal with Spurs, Yedlin has never been first choice at full-back for Argentinian manager Mauricio Pochettino. This appears to have made Yedlin receptive to another move, this time a permanent one.

Blessed with great pace, the USMNT player struggled with positioning and on-ball defending earlier in his career. His experience with the USMNT and, especially, with Sunderland last season saw him make decent improvements in those areas.

He may have preferred a move to another Premier League team, but Newcastle — a team he helped relegate while at Sunderland — are a big time club and will expect to spend only one season in the Championship. Playing time is the more important factor for Yedlin at this stage in his career, and a chance to help the Magpies gain promotion back to the Premier League will be a great experience and a possible springboard to a larger club.

Yedlin has drawn interest from fellow Championship club Aston Villa, with Sunderland also supposedly showing interest in bringing him back to the Stadium of Light. But it looks more likely that the Seattle-born Yedlin will end up at St. James’ Park.
