Women’s tennis star Serena Williams came up with a big third-round win at the US Open 2016 on Saturday with the victory breaking Martina Navratilova’s record.
On Saturday, Serena Williams scored a huge win for her tennis resume at the US Open 2016 tournament. The women’s tennis superstar has now surpassed the great Martina Navratilova with major win No. 307 for her career.
Serena bested Johanna Larsson of Sweden, 6-2, 6-1 in their third round matchup. Not only did Williams break Navratilova’s record with the win, she is now tied with Roger Federer for major wins regardless of gender. In her previous matchup, Serena took down Vania King of the United States, 6-3, 6-3.
After her latest win and breaking the record, Serena told the media, “Wow. That’s pretty awesome, and honestly what a better place to do it than here, where everything first started.”
Should Williams win at the US Open, it will make for her seventh title at the event. That will break a tie Williams has with Chris Evert for most-ever U.S. Open wins.
She’ll also grab career major title No. 23, which would set the record in the women’s Open era for that category. Right now, Williams is tied with another famous women’s tennis star, Steffi Graf, on top of that list. It seems now as if she is surpassing the game’s longtime legends to solidify her own legendary status.

Serena was the overwhelming favorite on the odds coming into this year’s U.S. Open tournament at +130 on the money line. The next closest competitor was Garbing Muguruza at +800.
The 34-year-old has looked good so far in this year’s Open. She suffered a third-round loss at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics last month but has dominated in her first several matchups back in the states. Next up for Williams in the fourth round will be Yaroslava Shvedova on Monday for the Round of 16.
Watch out as Serena keeps racking up the wins and breaking those records!
