Available for iPhone or iPad — here is a step-by-step walkthrough on how you can download iOS 10, the latest software update from Apple.

As is the case with every major software update, Apple plans to make major aesthetic and software changes with iOS 10. To demonstrate this, Apple revealed the new operating system months ago at WWDC ’16 and released the beta shortly thereafter.

The new software update is available to download any device newer than an iPhone 5 or iPad Mini 2. So, any iPhone 4 users or fans of the premiere iPad (Generations 1-3) are out of luck.

Updating to the newest software available is always the best thing to do for Apple users. Each version improves security, device speed, and battery life. However, iOS 10 plans to do much more — Messages will be smarter and more hands-on, Siri will play nice will third-party apps, Apple Pay will be available on the web, and your notifications will be more streamlined and intuitive.

As soon as iOS 10 goes public, you won’t have to wait for an iPhone 7 to get a taste of Apple’s latest and greatest. Here’s how you can download iOS 10:

From your computer —

  • Go to iTunes (if you don’t have an account, this would be a perfect time to create one. Apple will require a credit card but won’t charge it unless you make a purchase in the future.)
  • Connect your device and visit the device page.
  • Back up your device just in case something disastrous happens.
  • Once the update is available, you can download and install. Keep your device plugged in the whole time. If you unplug your device early, you might have to restore and start all over.
  • When the update is complete, eject your device and start exploring all the new features.

From your device over WiFi —

  • Go to Settings > General > Software Update
  • Download and install iOS 10.
  • Depending on the device’s storage capacity or quality of the internet connection, some software updates can take a long time.
  • Likewise, you can download the update but wait to install it later in the day. Whenever you choose to do so, make sure you leave your device plugged in. If it dies mid-update, you’ll have to connect to a computer and start from scratch.
  •  Your device will restart and reboot.

In some cases, your device may require to perform a setup again. As long as you have a back-up in iTunes, you can re-sync all your information.

Apple and Samsung are the only two phone manufacturers on the market worth giving your money to. While the Android software has always been open for tinkering, Apple is just now starting to give more freedom to its developers.

iOS 10 might be one of the first updates that doesn’t just mimic something else that’s already been done. Next year marks the iPhone’s 10th Anniversary so expect an even bigger update somewhere down the line.
