Redskins at Giants: Highlights, score and recap
By Matt Couden
Here’s the latest Redskins at Giants highlights, recap, and score results info for their 2016 NFL Week 3 game at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.
On Sunday, the Washington Redskins went into a battle against their NFC East rivals the New York Giants and came away with a hard fought victory 29-27. A lot was made over the Josh Norman and Odell Beckham sparring that would occur, and while they played a bit of a factor here, the Redskins were happy to have finally put a win on the board.
There were still issues for Washington but they are now 1-2on the season. Very early in this one a muffed catch by the Redskins resulted in a fumble. The Giants recovered it in scoring territory and three plays later had their first touchdown of the game from running back Shane Vereen. The Redskins got on the scoreboard with an early field goal to stay within distance of their opponents.
Rookie Sterling Shephard grabbed the first passing touchdown of the game for Manning with just over six minutes left in the first quarter. That made it a 14-3 contest. The Giants defense came up big again towards the end of the quarter, preventing a third down pass conversion and holding Washington to another field goal.
An impressive 52-yard punt return by Jamison Crowder finally woke up the Redskins in the second quarter, putting them closer to the end zone. They suffered several costly penalties which set back a potential scoring drive later. However, DeSean Jackson had back-to-back receptions which included the first touchdown of the day for his team. That would make it a 21-16 Giants lead.
Later, the Redskins picked up several more penalties and unfortunate injuries including DeAngelo Hall who would leave for the game. Cousins and company also continued with their mistakes. With six seconds left on the clock, Washington went for another play rather than kicking the field goal. That resulted in Cousins having to scramble, losing the ball and falling on top of it as time ran out for the half.
Jamison Crowder went off for a huge 55-yard rushing touchdown on a third down situation. That would put Washington ahead for the first time all day with 23-21 lead in the third. However, the Giants would go back on top 24-23 after Josh Brown’s first field goal of the day.
Washington would come right back, getting within field goal position and then kicking it to begin the fourth with the lead again. However, a big catch by Shephard followed by a penalized hit by Josh Norman and another huge reception from Beckham had the Giants within 20 yards of the end zone. The Redskins Quinton Dunbar made a one-handed interception a few plays later to prevent the touchdown.
A blocked punt inside the 20-yard line gave the Giants the ball back in scoring territory. However, a costly unsportsmanlike contact penalty after the play hurt the Giants, causing a replay of the fourth down. Later, New York would get into scoring territory and regain the lead 27-26 on a field goal.

Yet another Washington field goal came with just under two minutes remaining, giving them the edge once again by two. Cue up Eli Manning who has orchestrated 35 fourth quarter or overtime game-winning drives. It looked like he was about to do so once again after completing a huge pass play to Victor Cruz. However on the next play, Redskins’ defender Su’a Cravens dove in front of intended receiver Shane Vereen to help secure the Redskins’ first win of the season.
Highlights
Three stars of the game
Here are three possible stars of the game for Sunday’s game.
Kirk Cousins
Despite a big mistake to close out the first half, Cousins once again kept his team in striking distance of an NFC East opponent. In this game, he was sacked twice, but threw no interceptions. Cousins completed 21 of his 35 attempted passes for 296 yards and two touchdowns in the win. The mistakes are still there, but so is the quarterback who brought his team to the postseason during the Redskins’ 2015-16 campaign.
Dustin Hopkins
In today’s game, kicker Dustin Hopkins gave his team more than half their points and kept them close or ahead in this back-and-forth game. For the game, Hopkins made all five of his kicks including a long field goal of 49 yards and the game winner down the stretch. Basically, had he missed just once today, the Giants would have been 3-0 and the Redskins 0-3 right now.
Su’a Cravens
The rookie came up big in today’s game with that key interception in the final minute of play. Typically, Eli Manning picks apart defenses in the closing moments, but Cravens was in the right place at the right time. With his presence in the vicinity of Vereen, he helped his team get their first win of the season, rather than giving Manning his 36th comeback win late.
Odds
The Giants were a four or 4-1/2 point home favorite for this game earlier in the week. The over/under was listed around 46 points for the full game.
