Report: Charlie Strong may need to get to 8-4 to be safe at Texas
Charlie Strong and the Texas Longhorns reportedly need to get to 8-4 to possibly retain his head coaching position.
While it appears that Charlie Strong would be packing his bags with a one-way plane ticket out of Austin, he may have received a final chance to save his job. According to Horns Digest, if Texas finishes out 8-4, it’s likely that he can retain his position as the head football coach.
For Strong, this is the first dose of good news since he led the Texas Longhorns to an impressive victory over Notre Dame in the season opener. For Texas fans it’s probably bittersweet as they have hopes of throwing an insurmountable amount of cash at Houston’s head coach, Tom Herman.
With an already hot seat, Strong’s coaching seat is as sizzling as the Texas sun. After a middling start to the season for the third year in a row, conversations have surfaced about Strong potentially getting fired.
In Austin and in the state of Texas, football reigns supreme. Having said that, the Longhorns are desperate to get back to their winning ways. The program was losing its relevancy in the later years with Mack Brown, and it was expected that Strong would bring the program back to college football supremacy.
With remaining games against Big 12 heavyweights Oklahoma, Baylor, TCU, and Texas Tech, it gives the idea that going 8-4 is unlikely. If the impossible occurs and the Longhorns go 8-4 it’ll hallmark Strong’s best season as Texas’ head coach.

For run-of-the-mill college football programs, 8-4 is acceptable, but not for a program with the prestige such as Texas. However, it may be just enough to keep Strong around for a fourth season.
The ongoing coaching chronicle with Strong and Texas will be interesting to keep an eye on for the rest of the season. Having said that, can the Longhorns resuscitate Strong’s coaching lifespan by finishing with their best record since 2012?
