Jamison Crowder scores 85-yard TD on punt return (Video)

The Washington Redskins took the short road trip to face the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. Their special teams got on the board first this weekend.

It shaped us as an intriguing interconference battle between close geographic rivals when the 3-1 Baltimore Ravens hosted the 2-2 Washington Redskins.

The two teams make their homes roughly 40 miles from each other. And that was seemingly the same distance that Redskins wide receiver Jamison Crowder covered in the first quarter at Baltimore after the second-year performer fielded a punt from Sam Koch and took it 85 yards for the score, narrowing Baltimore’s lead to 7-6 at the time.

Never underestimate the impact of special teams in this game of football. Which is exactly why Redskins kicker Dustin Hopkins hitting the left upright with his PAT attempt prevented Jay Gruden’s club from forging a tie.

Baltimore opened up a 7-0 lead early in the game as quarterback Joe Flacco guided his team 75 yards in nine plays, culminating the drive with a seven-yard touchdown pass to tight end Crockett Gillmore. John Harbaugh’s club would take a 10-6 second-quarter advantage courtesy of a 31-yard field goal from Justin Tucker.

Fortunately for the Redskins, Crowder’s return was keeping them in the contest. The team’s first two possessions of the game netted a total of 24 yards, not even close to the ground covered by their speedy wideout’s big play on special teams.

Meanwhile, Washington was having even bigger problems on the defensive side of the ball. Ravens’ running back Terrance West was running amok on the Redskins in the early stages of the game, totaling 63 yards on the ground on his first six carries of the contest.

As halftime neared, Crowder had yet to catch a pass in the game. Washington may need more big plays from the talented youngster if they are to notch their third win in a row.
