Eric Decker will head to injured reserve following news of a partially torn rotator cuff.

Things continue to get worse for the New York Jets. On Wednesday morning they announced that wide receiver Eric Decker would be placed on injured reserve with a torn labrum in his shoulder:

When the injury first occurred it looked as if Decker had a chance to return. He was being reported as “week-to-week,” but now it’s obvious the injury was worse than previously thought. Decker was trying to play through the pain but will now have season-ending surgery to repair his labrum. He is expected to make a full recovery for 2017 which might be where the Jets are now focusing their attention:

The Jets find themselves at 1-4 and it’s well known how statistically low their chances of making the playoffs are. Some of the blame can be placed on the Jets secondary who rank second-to-last in passing yards per game surrendered. Darrelle Revis, a former All-Pro cornerback, has proven to be a shell of his former self, as he’s been burned repeatedly by receivers and also dealt with a hamstring injury of his own.

Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick can also share some of the blame. He has thrown 10 interceptions compared to just five touchdowns this year. At this point, Fitzpatrick is playing to keep his job after a terrible start to the season and also missing most of the offseason due to a contract dispute, making his play all the more frustrating.

All of this makes the loss of Decker, a huge red zone threat, even more devastating. More emphasis will be put on wide receiver Brandon Marshall to carry the load in his absence and you can also expect to see more of Quincy Enunwa, who has emerged as a small bright spot.
