Premier League table update: Liverpool share lead with Arsenal

Liverpool took care of business against West Brom, but failed to go top of the Premier League when they won by just one goal.

Even though the best game of the Premier League this week is yet to come, we still had a chance to see a new No. 1 team. At the start of the season, it looked like the Premier League was Manchester City’s to lose, but ever since they lost to Tottenham two weeks ago, they’ve fallen on hard times in all competitions. Both Arsenal and Liverpool have more points than them, while there is a rumored rift between Pep Guardiola and Sergio Aguero.

Riding a six-game unbeaten streak in the Premier League, Liverpool had only one thing on their mind: win. They dominated their game against West Brom from start to finish, and had to a two-goal lead for over 50 minutes. The Men in Blazers joked over the possibility of Jurgen Klopp’s men finishing the day at the top of the table:


But a late goal by Gareth McAuley wiped out their chances to do so, and despite Arsenal’s scoreless draw with Middlesbrough, they hold the top spot in the Premier League table by virtue of goal difference. Tottenham also failed to capitalize when they were held to a draw against Bournemouth.

With all that in mind, here’s how things stand in the Premier League title race:

With Chelsea and Manchester United in fifth and seventh place, respectively, their match doesn’t carry as much weight as it used to. But with Jose Mourinho returning to Stamford Bridge for the first time since getting sacked, there will be no shortage of storylines.

Liverpool now have five wins and two draws in their last seven Premier League games. They are a team to be feared now, as Klopp has them playing some amazing soccer. And without the burden of a European competition, they can focus all of their efforts towards winning the league.
