The Virginia Cavaliers caught the North Carolina Tar Heels off guard with an unlikely fake field goal.

Fake field goals are rare and not common in football. Although they happen every now and then, the Virginia Cavaliers set a new precedent for fakes on Saturday afternoon. As the Cavaliers lined up for a field goal against North Carolina, they set everyone in motion to the left side of the field and left the snapper and kicker lined up.

That’s when tight end Evan Butts snapped the ball to his left, which caught North Carolina off guard. Quarterback Matt Johns was there to catch the snap and he threw right back to Butts, who ran into the end zone for the touchdown.

So, lets recap what just happened here. The Cavaliers went full Indianapolis Colts, except it actually worked and it was genius. It’s not every day the guy snapping the ball is also the receiver but it worked to perfection here.

When a team is struggling to get points like the Cavaliers are, they have to take points in any capacity they can get them. Even if that means having the long snapper who is also the tight end run a route down the middle of the field.
