West Virginia Mountaineers junior Shelton Gibson gave his team the lead against Oklahoma State with a nifty little touchdown grab

Despite tempered preseason expectations, the West Virginia Mountaineers have been one of the best teams in college football in 2016. However, the criticism of this team is that they haven’t played anyone, really. However, that would change on Saturday in Week 9 of the season as they went on the road to face the dangerous Oklahoma State Cowboys. Early on, Shelton Gibson at least looked like he was up to the challenge.

The Mountaineers fell behind 6-3 early in the matchup, but were undeterred. After a solid 70-plus-yard drive down the field, West Virginia found themselves in the red zone. Lining up at the 19-yard line, quarterback Skyler Howard knew exactly where to go with ball.

Set out wide-left, Gibson ran a beautiful hitch-and-go route up the sideline. The defensive back bit ridiculously hard on the hitch, though, leaving him cooked as the receiver ran free. Howard then lofted a ball into the back of the end zone. The junior wideout then pulled off a difficult task of keeping his feet in bounds while laying out to make the grab. He did it with easy for a gorgeous 19-yard score to take the lead:

Sure, this may be one of their biggest tests to date. However, Gibson and the Mountaineers are a high-quality football team.

Obviously you can’t base that off of one talented receiver cooking his coverage and making a great catch. However, that connection between Howard and Gibson is one of many examples of how quickly this team can burn you. That catch was from 19 yards out, but could’ve gone for the length of the field if they’d been backed up. They still need to get out of Stillwater, but this West Virginia team is for real.
