Is Doctor Strange in 3D?

Doctor Strange promises to be one of the most visually stunning movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it won’t mean anything if it’s not in 3D.

Doctor Strange will be one of the most unconventional Marvel movies to hit the theaters. Even though we’ve seen magic in the MCU with Scarlet Witch, there’s never been a whole movie dedicated to it. For anyone who hasn’t read the comics, Doctor Strange is sure to be one of the biggest mind trips in a long time.

Even the trailers for this movie are visually stunning. Seeing Benedict Cumberbatch’s spirit leave his body and the shot of Manhattan folding in on itself stand out, with the latter pretty much lifted straight from Inception, is pretty impressive. A lot of people are wondering whether this movie is in 3D in order to get the full visual experience. Rest assured, though, it is. According to the movie’s Fandango page, you can watch it in both the regular and IMAX format.

Unlike a lot of movies these days, the 3D won’t be used as a gimmick. The film was shot with 3D cameras, and 15 minutes of it were screened in over 100 IMAX 3D theaters last month. Producer Kevin Feige also said that he wanted to use 3D as a way of serving the storytelling, saying “hopefully it helps bend people’s minds even more than with just the flat screen.”

If all this is evidence of anything, it’s that Doctor Strange will be one of the most unique cinematic experiences ever. This might be the most important use of 3D in a movie since Avatar, and there may not be a more important use of one following it since … well, Avatar 2. The fact that Doctor Strange is off to a great start on Rotten Tomatoes, too, means this should be the perfect antidote for Suicide Squad.

But if you do see it, just remember “3D or it didn’t happen.”
