After the Chicago Cubs jumped ahead 5-1 in Game 7, the World Series hopes of the Cleveland Indians were renewed with a wild pitch

The Cleveland Indians had to be looking up at the scoreboard entering the bottom of the fifth inning in Game 7 of the 2016 World Series full of angst. After going up 3-1 in the series, they now found themselves trailing by four runs in a decisive game. Even worse, the Chicago Cubs seemingly had all of the momentum in the world on their side. The Indians needed something big.

Lucky for them, all they had to do was get a few runners on base and Jon Lester was able to help them out with the rest.

After Carlos Santana and Jason Kipnis got on, Lester was on the hill in relief trying to keep things rolling for Chicago. Instead, he threw a breaking ball right into the dirt—a wild pitch. In fact, the pitch went so errant that both Santana and Kipnis were able to fly around the bags and into home plate, pulling the score to 5-3:

If you’re the Cubs, that’s the worst way to kill the momentum of a game. For the Indians at their home ballpark, though, that’s absolutely massive.

That’s the type of play that can change a game with the stakes of a World Series Game 7. However, Lester recovered and got out of the inning unscathed beyond those two runs. Then David Ross answered for the Cubs with a solo homer. Of course, with these two teams, Game 7 would be insane.
