Marcus Peters bailed the Chiefs out in a big way, stripping Kelvin Benjamin to set up a game-winning field goal.

There was a point in the Kansas City Chiefs game on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers where it looked like things were going to swing Cam Newton’s way. The Panthers were up 17-0 with a minute to go in the first half and the smiling, dabbing Cam Newton we all fell in love with last year was seemingly back.

But then the Chiefs defense decided to start making plays, and completely bailed out an offense that was as anemic as they come on Sunday. It started with an Eric Berry pick-six that made it a 17-14 game and was followed by yet another Cairo Santo field goal to tie things up.

After the Chiefs offense squandered an opportunity to get into field goal range, the defense stepped up and set up a game-winning attempt thanks to Marcus Peters.

It wasn’t just that Peters was able to force a turnover deep in Carolina territory, it was that he willed it into existence like few forced fumbles we’ve seen this season. Kelvin Benjamin appeared to have a clean catch and was fighting for a few extra yards — which he was right to do. But in fighting for those extra yards, Benjamin allowed Peters to reach in and literally tear the ball away from him.

That’s about as clutch as it gets. Kansas City was in no position to win that game, but their defense bailed them out. That’s the mark of a team that wants to win and knows how to balance weaknesses, as the Chiefs continue to roll in an AFC playoff race they can’t afford to stumble in.
