Report: Texas hiring Houston head coach Tom Herman
By Josh Hill
The Texas Longhorns will reportedly hire Tom Herman as the program’s next head coach, according to ESPN.
It was set in motion early in the season, with rumor and conjecture, and has concluded with confirmation. While the Texas Longhorns have yet to officially confirm, it seems that Houston head coach Tom Herman will be jumping ship to take over for Charlie Strong in Austin.
According to two ESPN reporters, the Longhorns will indeed hire Herman as soon as Saturday afternoon. It’s pretty much the definition of not wasting any time, and it’s a move that we all pretty much expected to see.
It has been a whirlwind 48 hours for Herman and all rumors involving his future. On Thursday, it was reported that he was nearing an agreement that would send him to Baton Rogue as the next head coach at LSU. Herman denied those reports, but they further sparked rumors in Austin about the future of Charlie Strong.
Almost as soon as it was reported that LSU was zeroing in on Herman, Texas was rumored to be firing Charlie Strong — something that was set in motion as early as the start of this season and heated up with every misfire the Longhorns had.

If anything, news that Herman was headed to LSU would have likely saved Strong’s job, but that all came crashing down on Saturday. Once it was announced — surprisingly so — that interim head coach Ed Orgeron was going to be named the next official head coach at LSU, Texas wasted no time in dismissing Strong and hiring Herman.
The question now is whether or not the Longhorns finally have the guy to recreate the glory days the program has lived through. Mack Brown left the program in shambles and Charlie Strong wasn’t able to fully repair things. Herman is taking over a Texas program better well off than it was when Strong inherited the mess, but there is still work that needs to be done.
