Nothing has gone according to plan for the New York Jets this season, and now Darrelle Revis may be checking out.

With a 3-8 record as the calendar flips to December, the New York Jets are playing out the string in a season that did not go as planned. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick played badly enough to be benched, then got the starting job back and may keep it over the final five games. Darrelle Revis is having the worst season of his career, and now there’s some indication it may get even worse over the rest of the season.

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, a confidant of Revis says the 31-year old cornerback has “made a lot of money” and, “if he had his way, he’d be done right now.” Those are troubling sentiments to come out in the midst of a season, to say the least, and with “Revis Island” being a comfortable destination for opposing wide receivers this season, it’s not entirely unexpected that Revis is frustrated.

It would be very surprising if Revis retires immediately, but ESPN’s Rich Cimini has already suggested the Jets will cut him after the season. Revis is due to make $15 million in 2017, including a $2 million roster bonus due on the second day of the league year, and the salary-cap-strapped Jets can save $9 million against next year’s cap by cutting him. And that leaves out the $22 million in salary and bonuses Revis is due in 2018 and 2019 combined, which the Jets can avoid altogether by releasing him.

Assuming his heart is really no longer in it, and his own recent comment about being “old” further points to it, Revis seems likely to retire after this season. That would keep the Jets from having to make an increasingly easy decision to cut him while theoretically allowing Revis to end his Hall of Fame career on his terms.
