Who is Derek Carr’s backup?
Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr suffered a broken leg on Saturday, so who is his backup?
The Oakland Raiders built a big lead and held on to beat the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday, and looking toward Week 17 they still have a chance to earn home field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs.
But quarterback Derek Carr went down with a leg injury in the fourth quarter of the game, and he’s out indefinitely with a broken right fibula. So the Raiders will play their regular season finale and any subsequent playoff games with their backup quarterback starting.
So who is Carr’s backup?
Carr was replaced on Sunday by Matt McGloin, and he went 2-for-3 for 29 yards including a clutch throw to wide receiver Amari Cooper that extended a drive. He had one pass attempt in two previous appearances this season, most recently in Week 12 against the Carolina Panthers when Carr was briefly sidelined with a dislocated right pinkie. Over the 2014 and 2015 seasons as one of Carr’s backups, McGloin totaled 51 pass attempts with 35 completions.
The Raiders were a much different team in 2013, when McGloin was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Penn State. He wound up making six starts that season, completing 118 of 211 passes (55.9 percent) for 1,547 yards with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions over seven games played. Not surprisingly during a 4-12 season, the Raiders went just 1-5 in McGloin’s starts as a rookie.

With a capable defense, a top-notch offensive line and solid skill position talent around him, Oakland can win games with McGloin under center. Rookie Connor Cook is now in line to be active for games as McGloin’s backup.
A deep playoff run obviously seems unlikely without Carr, who was a candidate for league MVP. And the Raiders may now be the most matchup-dependent team in this year’s NFL postseason.
