Wednesday night’s Oklahoma vs West Virginia contest was one of the most exciting games of the week and needed overtime to decide a winner.
When West Virginia saw Oklahoma on the schedule in Week 11, the Mountaineers probably thought they would take care of business against the 7-9 Sooners. Oklahoma has dipped quite a bit since the departure of Buddy Hield and the Mountaineers had been surging.
In fact, the Mountaineers defeated No. 1 Baylor last week by 21 points and looked to do the same, and then some, to Oklahoma. However, the Sooners hung tough and gave the Mountaineers a big loss at home.
Oklahoma played tough in the first half and kind of caught the Mountaineers by surprise, taking a three-point lead into halftime. The Mountaineers fought back in the final 20 minutes of the game, tying it up and sending the game into overtime.
The Mountaineers had a chance to tie up the game in overtime with just 2.5 seconds left on the clock, but a full-court West Virginia pass sailed out of bounds, handing the Sooners their biggest win of the season after having lost 8-of-10 games heading into this one.
West Virginia went from on top of the world in its home victory over No. 1 Baylor last week to a terrible home loss. This could act as a major confidence-booster for a young Oklahoma team.
Three Stars
Oklahoma’s senior guard Jordan Woodard was the top performer for the Sooners, finishing with 20 points, five assists, four steals and four rebounds. Oh, and he had the game-winning layup with 2.5 seconds left.
Freshman guard Kameron McGusty had a gutsy performance, finishing with 17 points and three big three-pointers is six tries for the Sooners.
West Virginia’s Jevon Carter led all scorers with 23 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. He looked like the best player on the floor.
