Lady Gaga was the performer at halftime of Super Bowl 51, and she most unsurprisingly made an anti-Trump, pro-love statement.

When it was announced that Lady Gaga was going to be the Super Bowl 51 Super Bowl halftime performer, we knew it was going to be an interesting time. Once Donald Trump was elected President, we figured her performance was going to be even more politically charged than it already was going to be.

It was well reported that Gaga was told to keep politics out of her performance and that she apparently agreed to that. But let’s be real, we all knew Gaga was going to do something at halftime that would register as a political statement.

The current climate in the country just made for the perfect storm. Gaga has never been shy about supporting love over hate, which is a theme these days in America. It was hammered over the head before the election and has become a rallying cry in the wake of Donald Trump’s election as President.

It wasn’t totally obvious, rather it was a subtle protest. Gaga started the halftime show by singing ‘God Bless America’, using the drones that we all heard about.

Meryl Streep used her Golden Globes speech to verbal attack Trump and his regime of hate and Gaga used the Super Bowl halftime show to visually attack him.

It’s yet to be seen what happens to Gaga in the wake of her halftime show. The NFL wasn’t really all about a political statement, and she clearly went against their wishes. They can’t be that surprised but there might be some sort of repercussion as far as not paying out her contract since she might have violated something in it.

There’s also the question of when Trump will tweet about the performance. It seems whenever he’s mentioned by a celebrity he has to respond — from SNL skits about him to Streep’s speech that never named him but was clearly about him.
