Former Tennessee running back Jalen Hurd set to visit Louisville

As he continues looking for a place to continue his college career, former Tennessee running back Jalen Hurd has another visit on the docket.

Seeming inexplicably, and within striking distance of becoming the school’s all-time leading rusher, running back Jalen Hurd left the University of Tennessee football program in the middle of last season. Reports of concerns about his fit in Tennessee’s offense and a desire to switch to tight end then surfaced, and Hurd had the option to declare for the 2017 NFL Draft.

Hurd is known to have visited Cal and Ohio State in January, and now at the relative mid-point of February he’s taking another visit.

According to Jody Demling of Scout.com’s Cardinal Authority, Hurd will visit the Louisville campus over the upcoming weekend.

Hurd finished with 2,635 rushing yards and 26 total touchdowns (20 rushing, six receiving) over three seasons at Tennessee, including 451 yards on the ground and five total touchdowns over seven games last season. That left him less than 450 rushing yards shy of surpassing Travis Henry as the Volunteers’ all-time leading rusher.

Oregon is also reportedly interested in Hurd, who may want to make a decision fairly soon despite the fact he’ll have to sit out the 2017 season under NCAA transfer rules. Hurd can practice during the year he has to miss though, so with spring practice on the horizon finding a fit for himself football-wise could be considered an urgent matter.

If you have dreams of Hurd going to Louisville and seeing him team up with 2016 Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson, not so fast. Jackson can declare for the NFL Draft after next season if he wants to, and another very good season as a junior would virtually guarantee he does so. But if Hurd is in place to play for the Cardinals in 2018, maybe Jackson could wind up re-thinking a decision to go pro.
