While most New Orleans Pelicans fans are focused on Jrue Holiday helping the team get right on the court, Holiday has upped the ante. The Pelicans announced today that Holiday has pledged $1,000 per point and assist toward The Greater New Orleans Foundation’s tornado relief during Friday night’s nationally-televised matchup against the San Antonio Spurs.

Holiday’s words, from the Pelicans’ official press release:

"“This financial pledge is a unique way I thought of that can have a positive impact on some of the peoples’ lives and help them get back on their feet and assist them in getting their lives back in order. It’s a blessing that nobody lost their lives in the tornadoes, but that doesn’t mean the work is done. I’ve been impressed with how our city and its residents have responded to those in need and this is my way of helping out.”"

This is yet another example of the good work done by Pelicans players throughout the years, continuing a tradition of community work and charity that is so important in New Orleans. Holiday has now been a member of the team for four years, and even with free agency looming, is now making a very pronounced decision to support his city.

With a national audience watching (uncommon for the Pelicans this season), Holiday will have the country cheering for that same city. This is a fantastic example of the way the NBA empowers its players to independently make good things happen in the places they play.

Holiday has a chance on Friday to make a real impact on those affected by the recent tornadoes in New Orleans. Said team President Dennis Lauscha, “This is a truly moving act of kindness and a significant gesture on Jrue’s part and it bears witness to the importance that our players put on their relationship with New Orleans.  In no way was he prompted to do this, instead this came directly from his heart and it’s touching to know that he and his family deeply care about those that have lost so much.”

Holiday’s fundraiser will be a fun, public way to bring attention and relief to a community that clearly deserves it.
