Perhaps with a bigger move in mind, the San Francisco 49ers are reportedly out of the Mike Glennon sweepstakes.

Despite not starting a game in two and a half seasons, Mike Glennon is in line to get a free agent contract befitting a starting quarterback this week. The New York Jets, Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers have all been mentioned as possible suitors, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers also reportedly making a significant offer for Glennon to stay as Jameis Winston’s backup.

The Jets have already fallen by the wayside in terms of interest in Glennon, with the possibility he’ll get $14-$15 million per year as the reported driving force. The Bears may be his preferred destination anyway, but now another team with a possible starting job to offer is out of the mix for Glennon.

According to CSN Bay Area, the 49ers have “no interest” in Glennon as their new starting quarterback. The financial commitment that will likely be required is surely a factor, but NFL Network’s Michael Silver has suggested it’s “more likely than not” that Kirk Cousins ends up as the 49ers’ quarterback. That’s a bit flimsy from Silver, and he did acknowledge a lack of a timeline (this year? 2018?), but the close timing of the two reports does not feel coincidental.

Leaving out his limited work (10-for 11 for 75 yards with a touchdown) over the last two seasons as Winston’s backup, Glennon is 5-13 as a starter with 4,025 passing yards, 29 touchdowns and 15 interceptions while completing 58.8 percent of his passes over his other 19 career games.

That’s more playing time than Brock Osweiler had in his career at this point a year ago, and the huge mistake by he Houston Texans in free agency seems to be on the mind of teams interested in Glennon now. Even if the Bears are practically competing against themselves, a slim free agent market for quarterbacks and a weak rookie class assures Glennon will get paid handsomely when a contract can officially be signed on Thursday.
