Cleveland Browns rumors: Kenny Britt agrees to terms
With the most salary cap space in the league, the Cleveland Browns are in line to sign wide receiver Kenny Britt.
The Cleveland Browns have the most salary cap space in the NFL, and a roster that lacks talent. That puts them in position to be big spenders in free agency, if any notable players are willing to join a perpetual rebuild that has no end in sight.
It’s unclear if the Browns will pony up to re-sign wide receiver Terrelle Pryor, who is arguably their best player but may not be well thought of by an analytics-driven front office. Regardless of Pryor’s status, the Browns have taken a step to bolster their skill position talent.
According to ESPN’s Adam Caplan, the Browns will sign wide receiver Kenny Britt to a four-year, $32.5 million deal ($17 million guaranteed). The Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys had some rumored interest in Britt over the last few days, but the former first-round pick appears to have simply gone to the highest bidder.
Britt had a career-high 68 receptions and a career-high 1,002 receiving yards for the Los Angeles Rams last season, with Case Keenum and rookie Jared Goff under center. Over three seasons with Rams, Britt averaged 16.0 yards per catch despite consistently poor quarterback play. For at least next season, a substantial upgrade under center is not likely for Britt in Cleveland.

Britt was in position to get paid in free agency, coming off the best season of his career. Questions of extra motivation in a contract year are worth bringing up, and they’re not necessarily unique. But it’s also possible Britt has matured at 28 years old, and he has some good years ahead of him. The Browns are making a bet on that, without impeding further moves, and how Britt’s deal is structured will show their overall faith he can repeat his 2016 production.
