After two bad years with the 49ers, Torrey Smith is reportedly set to sign with  the Philadelphia Eagles.

Around this time two years ago, Torrey Smith left the Baltimore Ravens for a five-year, $40 million deal with the San Francisco 49ers. Things did not go well there, as Smith totaled 53 receptions for 930 yards and seven touchdowns over the last two seasons (28 games), so it was not too big a surprise the 49ers’ new regime cut him this week.

The Ravens and the Philadelphia Eagles were immediately mentioned as the top two possible landing spots for Smith, with Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports suggesting the “strong likelihood” of a return to Baltimore. But on the first day of free agency, things have turned the other way with multiple reports indicating Smith will sign with the Eagles.

The Eagles were rumored to be interested in trading for Smith last season, but that obviously did not come to fruition. With a second chance now, Philadelphia has added a much-needed wide receiver.

Smith will reportedly sign a three-year, $15 million deal with the Eagles, and he’s set to step in opposite Jordan Mathews as a viable vertical threat for quarterback Carson Wentz. More importantly, Nelson Agholor and Dorial Green-Beckham will be pushed down the pecking order for playing time and targets.

Smith’s production can only improve going forward, with stability at quarterback San Francisco did not have during his time there. If nothing else, Smith learned a hard lesson about putting everything else aside and going to the highest bidder in free agency.
