The Masters 2017: Jordan Spieth highlights from Round 1
By John Buhler
2015 Masters Champion Jordan Spieth did not have a great Round 1 at August National. He shot a 75 (+3) on Thursday. Here are his highlights from Round 1.
Golfers are gradually finishing up their first round at Augusta National for the 2017 Masters Tournament. It’s rained all week in Augusta and was mostly overcast on Thursday with a lot of wind. Round 1 was not an easy one for the major’s participants, especially 2015 Masters Champion Jordan Spieth.
Spieth won his first career major in Augusta back in 2015. He was poised to repeat as Masters Champion before an epic collapse on Sunday in 2016 and his 2017 Masters run is not off to a great start. Spieth shot at 75 (+3) by the time he made it back to the clubhouse.
On the day, he had three birdies (2, 13, 16) and two bogeys (5, 14). What wrecked his opening round was an atrocious quadruple bogey on 15. He shot a nine on the par-5. Spieth responded with a two-short birdie on 16, but that back-nine was not particularly kind to Spieth yet again.
Not to say that he had the yips on the back-nine, but his last two trips through those series of holes have been disastrous for the young American golf prodigy. He’s only 23 years and has a lifetime of Masters Tournaments to play in before he leaves the PGA Tour.
If Spieth can get that rancid 15th hole out of his head on Friday, he should be in good shape to make the cut and contend for his second Green Jacket. Here are the highlights from Spieth’s lackluster opening round of the 2017 Masters Tournament.
Spieth may have exorcised his demons on 12 this time around, but they reappeared at August National on 15 most definitely. With nobody really taking the field by storm, Spieth can still get himself out of this hole if he shoots 70 or under during tomorrow’s Round 2.
