The Denver Broncos had running back Jamaal Charles in for a visit, and they are set to sign him pending a physical.

Since being cut by the Kansas City Chiefs in February, running back Jamaal Charles has gotten little interest on the free agent market. Missing all but eight games over the last two seasons will do that to interest from teams, after a torn right ACL in 2015 and a left knee issue last season, though Charles’ agent offered a video showing his client looking healthy now.

With the draft in the books, the Denver Broncos brought Charles in for a visit on Tuesday. Things apparently went well from the Broncos’ end, but the key part with Charles is how he’ll check out medically.

According Troy Renck of Channel 7 in Denver, the Broncos will sign Charles if he passes a physical. It will likely be an incentive-laden deal with very little guaranteed money, as Renck suggested, due to Charles being 30 years old with knee issues.

C.J. Anderson is Denver’s No.1 running back, but he had his 2016 campaign shortened by a knee injury of his own and he wasn’t especially good in the seven games he did play. 2016 fourth-round pick Devontae Booker had a mediocre rookie season (3.5 yards per carry, three lost fumbles), though he did have 31 receptions. Charles, even in a diminished state, would fit as a change of pace back for the Broncos.

If his deal with the Broncos falls through, Brad Fanning of 610 Sports Radio in Kansas City has reported the Green Bay Packers would have interest in Charles. Green Bay drafted three running backs, from the fourth round on, so any level of interest in Charles is unexpected at this point.

Charles was sure to have to wait until after the draft to sign somewhere, and now it appears teams are slowly starting to line up.
