The 2017 Kentucky Derby was run on Saturday, May 6 from the muddy confines of Churchill Downs in Louisville, and here are the full race highlights

Oftentimes when you think about how big of a deal the Kentucky Derby is, you only imagine Churchill Downs in terms of ideal conditions. You think of sun shining, crisp dry dirt, and the happy crowd basking in the grand weather. That ideal image that you’re imagining, though, is absolutely nothing like the scene that was happy with the 2017 Kentucky Derby.

Rains throughout the end of the week and into the weekend made for a muddy track in Louisville. If that wasn’t bad enough, the full day of racing, walking and practicing on the track only made that worse. What was left was a messy track that had the potential to make for a dirty race to go down in the 2017 Kentucky Derby.

What the condition, in addition to the field of horses, also managed to do was make the race a wide-open affair. The favorite shifted seemingly every half-hour throughout Friday and Saturday all the way up to post time. Classic Empire, McCracken, Irish War Cry, Always Dreaming and even a few others were all in the mix.

In addition to the favorites, everyone was also keeping an eye on Patches — who was the great story of the 2017 Kentucky Derby. The horse had his eye removed a year ago, but still continued to race and made it all the way to the most prestigious event in horse racing. Quite incredible.

With all this at play, the drama was high for the 2017 Kentucky Derby. So how did things play out on the track? Watch the full Kentucky Derby highlights below:

There’s no doubt that the conditions played a huge factor in how the race finished, but that’s the name of the game. And as one of the co-favorites, Always Dreaming handled the conditions and the competitors with ease.
