Colin Kaepernick rumors: 3 teams inquired
Where football sits on his list of priorities is an open question, but three teams have apparently asked an “adviser” about Colin Kaepernick.
As we see lesser quarterbacks get signed, and a couple others retire, Colin Kaepernick is the last man standing among notable free agent signal callers. A league-wide lack of interest has as much to do with his politics as a drop-off in play, but Kaepernick can surely at least compete for a backup job somewhere in the league. Assuming he still wants to play football.
Recent accounts of Kaepernick’s off-field activities have ranged from he doesn’t want to play football to he’s working out six days a week to stay ready for an opportunity. But more recent comments from a supposed adviser have added a layer to things.
According to USA Today, noted sociologist and civil rights activist Harry Edwards said three teams have called him about Kaepernick, who he has mentored.
"“They’ve asked, ‘Can he play? Does he want to play?'” Edwards said. “The last question I can’t answer. The first question, absolutely. If Kaep makes up his mind, he wouldn’t only go in and make a team, he’d put pressure on somebody to start.”"
For Edwards to call himself or be classified as an adviser to Kaepernick, and thus in the know about the full breadth of the situation, seems like a reach. No less an authority than Kaepernick’s girlfriend has backed that up.
If there’s any teeth to Edwards’ words, it’s worth wondering what three teams inquired about Kaepernick. It’s a long way from going through a back channel to ask about him to talking to his agent, but I would point to the Seattle Seahawks, Jacksonville Jaguars and the New York Jets as the three teams. At some point since free agency started in March, all three could have been looking at quarterbacks.

At this point, Kaepernick will probably have to wait for a quarterback injury to find a new team. Barring an unforeseen retirement announcement, he may be in an NFL uniform a some point during the 2017 season.
