White Sox outfielder Melky Cabrera fouls ball off his face

Melky Cabrera has been hot at the plate lately, so a mere foul ball off his face was hardly enough to immediately deter him.

Over his last 15 games, including Tuesday night, Chicago White Sox outfielder Melky Cabrera is 21-for-62 (.339) with four home runs, 14 RBI and 11 runs scored. His overall stat line this year is still not outstanding, with a .268/.319/.395 slash-line, six home runs and 30 RBI, but Cabrera has clearly been on a hot streak over the latter half of May.

In the bottom of the eighth inning against the Red Sox Tuesday night, Cabrera came up against reliever Blaine Boyer looking for his third hit of the game. On a 3-2 pitch, with a man on second and two outs, Cabrera was probably going to swing at anything close. The result was, suffice to say, less than ideal.

After fouling the pitch off the plate and being hit flush in the face, Cabrera stayed in the game and hit an infield single. He was lifted for pinch-runner Willy Garcia though, and his status going forward is unclear at this point. But Cabrera will surely get a night off Wednesday night if he has any lingering issues with his eye.

The combination of a pitch’s movement and a batter making contact at an imprecise angle creates the possibility of odd bounces, and Cabrera was a victim this time around. In the parlance pool players will use, that’s the definition of some “bad english.”

For the rebuilding White Sox, in the final year of his contract, Cabrera is a prime candidate to be traded and he’s in the midst of a nice hot streak. Apart from that, let’s hope he is not facing an extended absence and will be back in the lineup quickly to keep his momentum going.
