Dez Bryant recruits Darrelle Revis to the Cowboys via Twitter

Darrelle Revis can theoretically help the Dallas Cowboys, so wide receiver Dez Bryant has gone public with his sales pitch.

Entering his eighth season with the Dallas Cowboys, and under contract for two more years, wide receiver Dez Bryant has found a home. The Cowboys lost significant 2016 snaps in their defensive secondary from last season this offseason, so rookies Chidobe Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis are in line for significant roles right away.

The Cowboys have high expectations this year, so adding a veteran or two at this fairly late stage could still be viable. After two seasons of clear decline from his peak as a shutdown corner, Darrelle Revis was cut by the New York Jets. There has been no market for the soon-to-be 32-year old’s services, and with the Jets owing him $6 million regardless, Revis has no real incentive to take a bargain deal and play for free on a new team.

Salary cap concerns prevented the Cowboys from keeping the defensive players they lost. They gained some space when Tony Romo came off the books as a post-June 1 cut though, and Bryant has an idea who Jerry Jones should put that money toward.

Revis is the kind of big name Jones usually salivates over the prospect of signing or drafting, so the move can’t be completely ruled out. But even he has to know the future Hall of Famer’s game does not back up his name anymore, even if Bryant offers a recommendation to go along with a recruitment.

Questions about Revis’ commitment to football have surfaced over the last couple years, right in line with his marked drop-off on the field. That can’t be a coincidence, and it’s more than enough to keep teams away from him for three months now. It’s possible Revis is done, with or without a formal retirement announcement anytime soon.
