Marc-Andre Fleury agrees to waive no movement clause
Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury has agreed to waive his no movement clause for the Vegas Golden Knights.
The NHL Expansion Draft will require teams to expose some very good players, especially goaltenders, since teams will only be allowed to protect one. The Pittsburgh Penguins had a dilemma, with Matt Murray being the obvious future starter and backup goalie Marc-Andre Fleury having a no movement clause.
However, it appears the problem has been solved. Fleury will reportedly waive his no movement clause so he can be exposed in the upcoming expansion draft. The Vegas Golden Knights are reportedly very interested in the three-time Stanley Cup champion.
It’s worth noting Fleury has both a no movement clause and a no trade clause. If he waives the former to be exposed to the Golden Knights, he will still have the latter as protection. Reportedly, Fleury’s no trade clause gives him 12 teams he can refuse a trade to. Pittsburgh can still trade him to one of the 18 teams he can’t refuse a trade to, but that likely won’t happen until after the expansion draft. However, a trade with the Calgary Flames might make sense, since they need a goaltender to protect anyway.

Fleury’s legacy in Pittsburgh is a great one. The Penguins traded up to draft him with the first overall pick of the 2003 NHL Draft. Fleury came to the team when they were rebuilding, desperate for a star. Should this be his last days in a Penguins sweater, he can say he left the city in much better shape than it was when he got there. Fleury should be applauded for accepting his role as Murray’s mentor and backup goalie. The Penguins and their fans will remember him as a Stanley Cup champion, both on and off the ice.
