Leonard Fournette will be missed at LSU, but the way Derrius Guice looks in the weight room he’s ready to step in.

Leonard Fournette was a star from the start at LSU, with a high point as a sophomore in 2015 when he finished third in the county in rushing (1,953 yards) and fourth in rushing touchdowns (22). But he missed five games in 2016, as he battled an ankle injury, and that opened up an opportunity for Derrius Guice to shine.

Leaving aside four games last season where he had less than 10 carries and totaled 12 carries for 92 yards, Guice averaged 7.6 yards per carry over the remaining eight games. He topped 130 rushing yards in a game six times (over 250 twice), with eight touchdowns over the final four games of the season.

Fournette is off to the NFL this year, as the fourth overall pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in April. So Guice has the starting job to himself now. After battling an ankle issue during spring practice, the junior tailback looks like he’s ready for fall camp and the 2017 season to start.

LSU freshman defensive end Aaron Moffitt captured the first angle of Guice’s display of power, as he squatted 650 pounds. Guice is officially listed by the school at 212 pounds, so he’s able to put up over three times his body weight on the squat rack. Hard-core weight lifters might see only one rep and shrug their shoulders, but the rest of us can be impressed.

With Matt Canada in place as the new coordinator, LSU’s offense should move out of the old school run first, last and in between system Les Miles favored. But starting quarterback Danny Etling has limitations, and if he were to be injured a wealth of inexperience is behind him now. So Guice will be the focal point of the offense, as Fournette was, and he’s legitimately on any list of early Heisman Trophy candidates.
