NFL roundup: Tony Romo reiterates that he is done playing

Those expecting to see Tony Romo come out of retirement and play in the NFL this season should think again, as Romo once again said he was done playing.
During his NFL career, Tony Romo established himself as the unquestioned leader of the Dallas Cowboys. Last season, Romo suffered a back injury during the preseason, giving way to rookie Dak Prescott to lead the team in his absence. After the season, Romo retired, and will be the lead NFL analyst for CBS in 2017. He was asked on the Wednesday edition of NFL Total Access whether he is going to come out of retirement this season, to which Romo replied, “Like I said before, I am done.”
Staying with the Dallas Cowboys, it looks like veteran running back DeAngelo Williams will not be joining them this season. Williams, citing his loyalty to the team he grew up rooting for, said that the Cowboys were one of four teams he would not, and could not, sign with for the upcoming season. The other three are the Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns, and Jacksonville Jaguars, with the Panthers being a former team, and the other two being longshots to make the playoffs this season.
Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians released a book this week, and the stories in it are downright incredible. Doing radio to promote the book on Wednesday, Arians told of how he drank paint during his childhood, while having to have his stomach pumped twice because of it. The 64-year-old Arians also spoke about his team’s need to win close games this season, as they missed out on the playoffs last season after making it to the NFC Championship Game the year before.
The Houston Texans traded up in the 2017 NFL Draft to select Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson, who was fresh off a national title game victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide. Watson is currently behind veteran Tom Savage on the Texans’ depth chart, though he plans to be ready if called upon. The rookie told NFL Network’s Alex Flanagan on Tuesday that he is “just kinda taking it one day at a time, and whenever that time comes, I’ll be ready.”

Finally, one NFL legend feels that he is nearing the end of his career. Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said on Wednesday that he is “starting the back 9 of his career,” though he showed no signs of slowing down last season. Rodgers led his Packers to the NFC Championship Game, losing to the Atlanta Falcons, but once again showing why he is considered one of the best signal-callers in the game.
