The Punjabi Prison match returned at Battleground on Sunday night, with Jinder Mahal defending the WWE title against Randy Orton.

The rivalry between WWE champion Jinder Mahal and Randy Orton has gone on since April, and we finally saw it reach a boiling point in the return of the Punjabi Prison match at Battleground.

The feud has been personal and intense, and we saw Orton willing to do anything to get his hands on Mahal and another shot at the WWE title after two straight losses to the Maharaja for the belt. Mahal chose the stipulation thanks to Shane McMahon, and we got a brutal match on Sunday night with some high stakes.

We got a nice, in-depth look at the structure Mahal and Orton would find themselves in before the two made their way to the ring, with the huge structure dominating the arena.

In a strange element, we saw Mahal walk out as a lone wolf to the ring for his defense inside of the Punjabi Prison, as the Singh Brothers hoped to respect the structure and let Mahal handle his business on his own inside of the two cages.

Almost immediately in the match, Mahal called for a door to be opened, with just 60 seconds to try and escape the first cage before the door shut permanently. In the end, neither Mahal or Orton could make it out of the structure in time, and the door locked for good.

Again, Mahal called for the second door, and Orton stopped anything from happening for 60 more seconds, locking yet another opening in the process.

Orton ended up being the one to call for the third door, and it was all for nothing as another option locked for the two superstars.

For the fourth door, Orton called for it to be opened and set up for an RKO on Mahal to make things even easier on him. Mahal reversed it and set up for his finisher, before Orton reversed it in mid-air for an RKO.

Meanwhile, the Singh Brothers made their way into the structure and got Mahal out before locking Orton in the first structure. Mahal began to climb the outer structure, as Orton scurried up the inside cage and hopped to the top of the next structure beside Mahal.

Orton launched Mahal to the floor, but the Singh Brothers came to the rescue and dragged Orton back down off the cage and beat The Viper down on the floor. Orton eventually took down Mahal’s backup, while the champ turned to Plan B.

Orton was hindered once more on his way up the second structure, but decided to launch one of the Singh Brothers off the top of the cage and through the announcer’s table in an amazing spot.

Orton took control of the match and looked like he was about to win before we saw the return of The Great Khali to hinder Orton from scaling the prison and allowing Mahal to scale the cage and win the match.

It’ll be interesting to see if Khali stays as a permanent piece of the stable with Mahal and the Singh Brothers, or if he just came for the special Punjabi Prison return.

The match capped off an otherwise lackluster show, albeit while providing another controversial ending in the Mahal-Orton feud.
