Lucas Duda was traded from the New York Mets to the Tampa Bay Rays, and Curtis Granderson was not ready to let him go without a fight.

A little backstory is necessary to preface this post. As some of you may be aware, Lucas Duda is a first baseman for the New York Mets. Prior to tonight, they were the only MLB team he had ever played for. The big first baseman is a relatively shy fellow who does not love playing up to the camera in this social media age.

That did not stop former All-Star Curtis Granderson from attempting to create a presence for Duda online. Roughly two years ago, Grandy started documenting the most mundane parts of Duda’s day in the clubhouse, like eating lunch or getting treatment, in an effort to get him to open up and show more personality. Hilarity ensued, with Granderson often providing commentary and play-by-play.

Sadly, all of that is coming to an end. Duda has been traded to the Tampa Bay Rays, while Granderson is left playing for the New York Mets. Most of us could have predicted this sad day would eventually come, what with the Mets fighting to avoid falling 20 games below .500.

Granderson was obviously distraught over the loss of his best pal in the Mets clubhouse, and attempted to prevent him from leaving to join the Rays across town as they take on the New York Yankees in the Bronx.

This is easily the best reaction to a trade in recent MLB history. By now, we’re used to #hugwatch taking over Twitter when a trade is imminent. This was a fun way to inject new life into the trade deadline, and if this is the last post on the We Follow Lucas Duda Instagram account, it was a smashing way to go out.

While it lasted, this really was one of the most fun social media accounts in baseball. The absurdity of Granderson sneaking up and filming a reluctant Duda, combined with the peak behind the curtain that few teams are willing to give their fans was a real and unexpected treat. You could tell Duda was not on board at first, but when he came around and got in on the joke, it was even better.
