Earlier this week, Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay tweeted that his team was in the middle of trying to make what he called a huge trade. It appears that the trade the owner was talking about has finally happened. No, the Colts didn’t pull the trigger on a deal for Maurice Jones-Drew. No they didn’t get Wes Welker, Mike Wallace, Greg Jennings or any of the other rumored wide receives.

Instead, the Colts have acquired Dolphins cornerback Vontae Davis in exchange for a second round draft pick.

Let’s address the anti-climactic elephant in the room, it’s a snoozer of a trade. Some NFL pundits are going to try and talk this up like Irsay pulled off a mega deal for a top cornerback. But the real winners here are the Dolphins — and that’s not something that’s been said in a while.

Yes, Vontae Davis is a solid cornerback who when he’s got his head on right, is a top 10 corner in the league. But he recently lost his starting job to free agent hire Richard Johnson and he’s been noted for having more than just a little baggage. He’s been suspended for fighting now ex-Dolphin Brandon Marshall, sometimes quits on the field and as a result has been labeled immature by many familiar with him.

Chad Johnson wasn’t the only player the wishes the camera weren’t around for the filming of Hard Knocks. Davis is clearly seen showing up to Dolphins camp overweight and out of shape for a cornerback. He also can replay the footage of him taking little Vonte Davis breaks during practice.

Even Darrelle Revis tries harder in practice — but then again Revis backs up his cocky attitude by being the best cornerback in football. Davis is just a Revis wannabe who know has to recover what’s left of his career.

Thanks to this trade (or gift, you could say) the Dolphins dump a non-starting cornerback for a second round pick meaning they now have two in this year’s draft. As for the Colts, Jim Irsay sure can muster up hype via social media, but this is really an anti-climactic end to the whole “I’m busting out the checkbook” trade this was billed as.

But this is how bad the situation at cornerback is for the Colts — Davis is their new top man. If Davis can get his head right, lose the excess weight and perform like he should and can, this will look like more of an even trade. But if the Dolphins run away with whoever they select with the Colts (likely) high second round draft pick, this is going to go down as a pretty lopsided steal for the Dolphins.
