As we get closer and closer to free agency, every rumor begins to get more and more interesting. It was hinted at last week, but news that the Carolina Panthers might make a run at wide receiver Mike Wallace remains as relevant as ever. Teams can’t officially tamper with players until this weekend and free agency doesn’t open until March 12th, but that’s not stopping teams from hinting at where they might go.

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera spoke with NFL AM last week and hinted that Cam Newton might have a new target to throw to in 2013 and his name may or may not be Mike Wallace.

“What’s going to be interesting is how things unfold once we get to March 12,” Rivera said on “NFL AM” from the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. “There’s a lot of things that are out there that we have to really take into consideration. You know, we’ll see how things are going to affect us when we get to the 12th.”

According to reports, the New England Patriots were briefly rumored to have been interested in Wallace but it appears he’s not the best fit for them at this time. However, the same cannot be said for the Miami Dolphins and Cleveland Browns as both teams are reportedly going to make respective runs at signing the wide out this offseason.

Wallace is one of many names to watch this offseason, as he almost certainly won’t be back with the Steelers in 2013. Depending on who else hits the open market, Wallace very well could be the most coveted receiver in free agency this offseason.
