NFL Free Agency: Brandon Gibson Viewed as Dolphins Backup Plan for Mike Wallace
By Josh Hill
The Miami Dolphins seem to be the only team interested in signing overrated wide receiver Mike Wallace, and it’s looking more and more like they’ll be getting what they wished for once free agency officially begins on Tuesday. However, in the event that a team swoops in at the last minute and steals Wallace out from under the Dolphins, they have a contingency plan in place in a player who arguably has much more upside than Wallace does.
USA Today confirmed on Monday that the Miami Dolphins have indeed made contact with free agent wide receiver Brandon Gibson, but he’s being viewed as strictly a backup plan in case Mike Wallace can’t be signed. According to USA Today, if the Dolphins pass on him, Gibson is expected to sign with one of the three other AFC East teams.
"Gibson, who told USA TODAY Sports last week he likely won’t return to the Rams, is expected to draw interest from the rest of the AFC East – the New England Patriots, New York Jets and Buffalo Bills."
No one else is interested in Wallace and the Dolphins seem ready to throw gobs of money at him to get him in South Beach. But Gibson showed impressive flashes while with the Rams and has a greater upside to his career at this point than Wallace does. While Gibson is still trying to make a true name for himself, Wallace seems content with being a mercenary in the lightest of senses, as he’s far more interested in his paycheck than he is with his performance.
