2013 Golf: Redstone Golf Course Expected to Toughen up on Friday
By Les Bailey
With the weather in South Texas getting a bit more windy, and humid, expect the golfers going out on Friday afternoon at The Shell Houston Open, to find conditions a little tougher then they had on Thursday morning. The first round produced scores in the afternoon that were about two strokes tougher that the morning crew, but today it looks to be around two shots more difficult than Thursday.
For one thing, the greens will harden with the wind, and not hold as well on the approach shots. The second is, pin placement on Thursday was very generous. Look for pins to be a little closer to the huge amounts of water on this golf course for Friday’s action.
The Texas wind is different than what PGA Tour players are used to. In Texas, the wind tends to swirl around this golf course, and swirl in gusts. You will find players who hit good shots that will either fly the green, or come up 10 yards short simply because the wind changed direction during their back-swing.
Quotes from PGATour.com: Fred Albers is a course reporter for SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio
"If players caught the wind just right, they could ride the wind to tremendous distances. At the 592 yard, 15th hole, Keegan Bradley hit a 330-yard drive and reached the green from 262 yards out. He missed the 8-foot eagle putt but walked away with a very easy birdie en route to shooting a 70."
It should be an interesting round of golf this afternoon. Current leader D A Points went out early on Thursday, and will face an ardjuant task to hang on to his slim lead on Friday afternoon. John Rollins shot a -7 under 65 in the afternoon on Thursday, and has the advantage on Friday of playing in the morning session. Rollins began his day one stroke off the lead.
