Starting Pitchers from the Waiver Wire-April 12 Fantasy Baseball

Friday’s full slate of games gives us some great starting pitching options from the waiver wire. There’s been many teams forced to reshuffle their rotation due to the weather issues and injuries, but as of now these are the scheduled starters for Friday that I think are worth taking a look at if you’re combing the waiver wire for a spot start or a streaming option this Friday.

Pitching Pickups

Ross Detwiler-Washington Nationals: (14.9%) Detwiler is your best shot if you’re looking for a win as he faces the Braves in Washington. Last year, he went 8-2 with a 2.59 ERA at home as opposed to 2-6 with a 4.38 ERA on the road. He started five games against the Braves with a 3.38 ERA. The Braves will counter by sending Julio Teheran to the mound who gave up five runs in five innings against the Cubs in his first start. Detwiler’s first star was more successful as he went six innings only allowing an unearned run to the Reds while allowing six hits, one walk, and striking out one. Detwiler typically won’t give you high strikeout numbers, but if you’re looking for a W he’s a good option since he’s at home.

Carlos Villanueva-Chicago Cubs: (0.0%) Villanueva had an outstanding first start holding the Braves to a run on six hits in 6 2/3 innings with six strikeouts. After the rainout Wednesday, he gets an extra day’s rest, but now faces the Giants instead of the Brewers. San Francisco isn’t known for its powerful offense, and Matt Cain, the opposing starter, has struggled. Cain’s 0-1 with a 8.38 ERA, but trusting the Cubs offense is never a great play. Villanueva should be able to have a solid outing and help your WHIP and ERA, but if you need a win it’s best to look elsewhere.

John Lannan-Philadelphia Phillies: (0.4%) Lannan faces the Marlins Friday night who are last in the league coming into Thursday in runs scored. He lasted seven innings his first start against the Royals allowing three runs on five hits while striking out five and not walking anyone. He should be in line for another good outing against the light-hitting Marlins and makes a nice one-start option for pickup off the waiver wire.

Felix Doubront-Boston Red Sox: (3.2%) The Red Sox elected to bump Doubront back a day when they put John Lackey on the DL and have Alfredo Aceves face the Orioles not the Rays. As a result, Doubront comes back after an extra day’s rest to face the Rays. In three starts against Tampa last year, Doubront went 2-0 despite a 4.32 ERA. He was solid but not spectacular in his first start at Toronto, but should be better at home. He did get six strikeouts in his five innings of work, and he’s a better option if you’re searching for K’s.

Jon Garland-Colorado Rockies: (0.2%) Garland beat the Padres in his first start of the year going six innings while allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two. Friday he’ll has San Diego again this time at Petco Park. He’ll be opposed by Tyson Ross who he beat a week ago, and since the Rockies have a more potent offense I think there’s a good chance he’ll have the same result. Garland isn’t going to give you K’s and may give up a run or two, but if you’re after a W he can deliver as he showed last week in this same matchup.
