Denver Broncos veteran cornerback Champ Bailey looked lost against Torrey Smith in the team’s final game last season. Bailey looked slow and like he lost a step, so people were immediately questioning whether he should make the move to safety like Charles Woodson has made in the past.

If you ask Bailey, he’s not ready for that switch until he is forced from the position by outstanding play from the younger players at his position.

“Hey, until these young guys start doing something, I’m not taking a back seat to them. Later on, maybe, but right now I still feel like I can play at the level I expect and the level they expect me to at corner. Besides, I’m not even close to 36. I’m 34,” Bailey said, via the Denver Post.

“I feel like we can be better this year,” Bailey said. “That’s what I’m looking forward to this year, and that’s a big difference from some other years. There have been years when I came back to get going and you didn’t feel that way about what we could do. What this team can do remains to be seen, that’s on us. But when you look at who’s here, starting with the quarterback we have, if we stay healthy, we need to be there in the end.”

There is a lot of belief that the Broncos will be targeting a young quarterback early in the 2013 NFL Draft — perhaps even the first-round.

Bailey may not like to hear it, but his replacements will soon be on the roster. If he would like to help out the team in any way possible, then a move to safety is something that may have to be done.
