Fantasy Baseball: Waiver Wire Pitching Pickups, 4/23/13

Tuesday in Major League Baseball features quite a bit of divisional play across the nation as well as a strange interleague series between the Marlins and Twins and a few East vs West matchups as the A’s and Dodgers play in New York and Boston. Amid these games are a few starting pitchers worth picking up if you need help in your rotation.

Here’s the options available in at least half of ESPN leagues that I think are worth a look for Tuesday:

Tony Cingrani-Cincinnati Reds: (49.5%) Just under the cut line, the Reds rookie probably will be owned in more than 50% when he makes his start against the Cubs. He’s definitely worth grabbing if he’s still available in your league. He started his MLB career with a solid outing last week against the Marlins throwing five innings of one-run baseball allowing five hits and striking out eight. He needs to be more efficient with his pitches Tuesday so that he can get deeper into the game, but he’s the top option if you needs strikeouts and a good shot at a win.

Patrick Corbin-Arizona Diamondbacks: (11.2%) Corbin is scheduled to start against Matt Cain at San Francisco. He’s been pitching well enough that even if Cain out-duels him he can still contribute. Corbin comes in 2-0 with three starts of at least six innings allowing two, zero, and one runs. His ERA is just 1.42 and he has 13 K’s in his 19 innings. Cain has had his struggles so far this season, so it’s not out of the question that Corbin gets the win if he can have another solid start like his last one in Yankee Stadium.

Jose Quintana-Chicago White Sox: (7.0%) Quintana faces Zach McAllister and Indians at home at the Cell where he was lit up in his first start of the season by the Mariners. Since then though, Quintana has been exceptional not allowing a run in his last two starts spanning 13 2/3 innings allowing just six hits and striking out 14. He finally got the win as the Sox cruised past Toronto his last time out. The start before he shutout these same Indians allowing just one hit in seven innings. Hopefully he can contribute another solid start like that one on Tuesday.

Wade Davis-Kansas City Royals: (4.1%) Davis is a high-risk pickup since he’s starting Tuesday at Detroit. However, the Tigers haven’t been scoring as much lately, and Davis was able to shut down Atlanta who was tearing it up at that point. His start also does have the potential to be high-reward. Last time out, he shut out Atlanta for seven innings allowing just five hits and striking out seven at Turner Field. The win moved him to 2-0 and gave him back-to-back shutout starts. Davis may not keep that streak up against the potent Tigers lineup and is opposed by Max Scherzer who’s also pitching well, but Davis could have another quality start if he can keep dealing like he has been.
