The Anaheim Ducks may have been the 2-seed in Western Conference the Ducks weren’t the better team in their series against the Detroit Red Wings. It took seven games to come to that conclusion but as the dust settles on the first round of the Western Conference playoffs, the Red Wings are still standing and the Ducks are quacking their way out of the postseason.

A notable thing to look at is the struggle had by netminder Jonas Hiller. Despite looking decent during the season and never getting truly unseated by rookie Viktor Fasth, Hiller struggled mightily against the Red Wings in just about every game he played between the pipes and his three goal performance in the fatal Game 7 should really not come as a gigantic shock.

As for the Red Wings, they have a heritage of winning but many doubted that this team could match up with the success had by Wings teams of the past. But while there are still doubters out there, especially now that Detroit is headed to Chicago for a showdown against the Blackhawks, the Red Wings are starting to come together as a team that nows how to win and even if they’re lacking the depth of previous teams, the talent is definitely there.

But this series will be remembered for the collapse of the Ducks, who were hoping great netminding could propel them deep into the postseason like it has in years past. But this isn’t your Jean Sebastian-Gigure Ducks team, and they were anything but Mighty in the series. They made a push late in the game against Detroit to make it 3-2, but really that was just fitting for the effort put in by Anaheim.

Too little, too late.

And now it’s so long Anaheim and hello Chicago for the Red Wings. Careful before you write them off, as that’s exactly what some did before there series with the Ducks and now only the doubters look foolish as Detroit is on the Western Conference Semifinals.
