San Diego Chargers outside linebacker Melvin Ingram was believed by many to be poised for a breakout season, but all of those hopes came crashing down on Tuesday when Ingram suffered a torn ACL during the team’s OTA. With Ingram out for the season, the Chargers have decided to bring in a very established pass rusher for a meeting. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, former Indianapolis Colts defensive end/outside linebacker Dwight Freeney will be flying out to San Diego to meet with the Chargers on Wednesday.
Here is Schefter’s report:
The move makes perfect sense on a number of levels.
Not only are the Chargers very interested in signing Freeney to fill the void left by Ingram’s injury, but new Chargers general manager Tom Telesco spent the past 15 years in Indianapolis so he is very familiar with Freeney and his ability.
As of now, this is just a meeting tomorrow, but it would not be surprising if the two sides worked their way towards an agreement.
