While the stories “flood” in concerning the condition of Merion Golf Club due to massive rain, Phil Mickelson missed Tuesday’s practice round for an important family commitment.

That commitment was Mickelson’s daughter graduating the 8th grade, and in response to why he departed on Monday night instead of his previously scheduled Tuesday departure, Mickelson said (in a statement):

"My daughter Amanda is speaking at her 8th grade graduation ceremony and I always planned on being here for that, but since it was raining so much Monday and we didn’t know if we’d even be able to play a sloppy course, I came home last night to practice in great weather on my range and greens. I’ll be ready to go Thursday."

In my opinion, this is the epitome of a non-story, as most parents would love to be at an event such as this for their children. However, with Mickelson being one of the favorites to grab another major title (and coming off of a top-5 finish at the St. Jude’s last week), the level of scrutiny is high. I firmly believe that he’ll perform at the same level as he would have if he chose not to attend, and if anything, the “easier” travel schedule of a Monday departure likely helps Mickelson in the wake of a muddy course.

Mickelson is a 4-time Major winner, and frankly, is as likely as anyone (this side of Tiger Woods) to win the rain-soaked US Open. However, the playing conditions likely level the playing field significantly, as the course will be very, very wet (and slow) which will focus the attention on the short games of the players. Mickelson was likely compete throughout the weekend, but if he struggles, the reason won’t have anything to do with an altered travel schedule.
