Memphis Grizzlies Will Interview George Karl Monday
By Daniel Nicks
With Lionel Hollins officially out of Memphis, the Grizzlies haven’t been shy in their interest for George Karl. As they reportedly contacted the coach just minutes after he parted ways with the Denver Nuggets.
Karl led the Nuggets the a franchise-record in wins and was named Coach of the Year. But his firing was widely regarded as a result of his inability to take the team out of the first-round more than once in the last decade.
Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports had hinted at a potential coaching swap between the two shortly after the incident. And quite frankly, I just felt he was being your run-of-the-mill ESPN troll. Turns out that might actually come to fruition, as Hollins interviewed the the Nuggets Thursday and Karl is scheduled to meet with the Grizzlies Monday.
Dave Joerger, the Grizzlies lead assistant coach, is still considered the front-runner in most circles however. And many feel that Karl would be unable to carry on the defensive culture that Hollins brought to Memphis. Which is obviously a major concern with how the Grizzlies roster is currently constructed.
Ed Pinckney, Alvin Gentry and Brian Shaw are also considered candidates for the position.
