When the season premier of HBO’s Hard Knocks ended last night, the lasting image was that of Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Larry Black after he suffered a dislocated ankle and broken leg. The injury actually occurred in real-time last week, and today, the Bengals today released Black in the waived/injured category. If Black clears waivers he will revert to the Bengals’ reserve/injured list.

Because the team placed him on waivers, he could be claimed by another team and stash him on their roster via the IR, but it’s more liekly that he’ll clear waivers and rejoin the Bengals. Once he has surgery, he’ll be able to rehab his injury and come back healthy and ready to compete for a spot on the roster next season.

At Indiana, Black played in 48 career games while registering 127 tackles, eight sacks, 27.5 tackles-for-loss, two fumble recoveries and four passes batted down. As a senior last year, he finished second on team as a senior in sacks (4.0) and tackles-for-loss (12), and also logged 36 tackles, one fumble recovery and two pass breakups.

For now, Black will have to wait at least one more year before he’s able to fulfill his dreams of playing in the NFL.
