Beno Udrih signs 1-year deal with New York Knicks
By Brad Rowland
It had been speculated for days (or weeks, depending on who you follow), but the New York Knicks have officially acquired another point guard.
The team announced on Thursday that PG Beno Udrih had signed a 1-year contract, and various sources (including ESPN.com) are reporting that the deal is for $1.27 million. Udrih is coming off of a bit of a whirlwind season in which he spent time in both Milwaukee and Orlando, but he has been a relatively solid NBA guard for a number of years.
In 2012-13, he averaged 8.2 points and 4.6 assists per game with a very strong 3-point shooting percentage (39.6%) in a short stint with Orlando. On the whole, he has produced near league-average efficiency (15 PER) for his career, and while he is defensively challenged, his offensive skill set plays well in this uptempo, open-court version of the NBA.
For New York, the Udrih deal is a bit of a luxury move. They already have Raymond Felton and Pablo Prigioni under contract, but with Udrih’s size (6-foot-3), he could play some shooting guard in a pinch. In actuality, this is a pretty large bargain for the Knicks, but at the same time, it pushes their luxury tax bill up over $30 million for this season alone.
Beno Udrih may not push the Knicks over the top, but he’s almost certain to provide quality play at a position that is coveted in the league.
