The New York Jets have a quarterback competition on their hands between Mark Sanchez and the rookie out of West Virginia, Geno Smith, if you live under a rock and were unaware. Mark Sanchez has remained publicly adamant that he is confident he’ll win the job.

The Jets new offensive coordinator Mary Mornhinweg is implementing a West Coast offense and it demands a lot out of a quarterback particularly precise footwork. That would suggest that Geno Smith has an edge over “butt-fumble” aka Sanchez.

Smith has apparently been struggling in camp and ‘sputtering.’

“He’s got to power through it,” Mornhinweg said, via Darryl Slater of The Newark Star-Ledger. “It is an awful lot of installations. I believe we’re at No. 10 right now, so you add it all up and it’s been quite extensive. We’ll see how he rebounds.”

Smith says it is all about how he bounces back.

“I think the best tell of the top player you are is how you regroup and how you come back and perform afterwards,” Smith said of his recent struggles.

Mark Sanchez on the other hand has had an outstanding camp.

“Mark has had an outstanding camp,” Mornhinweg said.

If Sanchez is named the starting quarterback it could be a season filled with boos if fans continue to attack Sanchez.

The Jets take on the Detroit Lions tonight.
